The Octopus Hook is a popular name given to this style of hook. The up-eye, short-shank, offset spear, and beak point make it a superior hooking tool, used equally as a bait hook or in fly tying. These hooks are offered by several manufactures in various colors, but he color red is especially effective in helping to trigger fish strikes.

The Daiichi 1222 hook is the ultimate dry fly hook. Inspired by Darrel Martin's theory of the best dry fly hook, this hook features what modern tiers look for; wide gape, mini-barb, with an upturned tapered shank which presents mayfly wings in a very natural angled position. The 1222 hook features Daiichi’s Crystal Finish which is a white, silvery plate. A fish looking up at a fly with a “Crystal Finish” hook will find that hook almost invisible, especially with the sky in the background.
